Overview

Leading Spanish shipbuilder uses Cadmatic to design technically demanding CSOV

GONDAN Shipbuilders, known for their innovative approach to ship design, has delivered a remarkable Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV), the Sudri Enabler, for Edda Wind ASA. Designed for offshore wind platform support, the vessel showcases a pioneering mix of sustainability and cutting-edge technology.

“Cadmatic’s shared database feature fosters collaboration and significantly accelerates the design process.”

Cadmatic use in a nutshell

Customer challenge
  • Integrate complex systems within limited space
  • Ensure seamless collaboration between multiple design offices
  • Adapt the design to evolving owner expectations
Cadmatic solution
  • Used Cadmatic’s 3D modeling for detailed design coordination across all systems
  • Used Cadmatic’s shared database to facilitate real-time progress monitoring and data sharing
  • Provided stakeholders with continuous access to the up-to-date 3D model

The vessel features a fully electric 3D crane and a Walk-to-Work (W2W) system with a motion-compensated gangway and elevator for 26 technicians. Designed by Salt Ship Design as one of the world’s most eco-friendly vessels, it includes innovative propulsion with two cycloidal propellers powered by permanent magnet electromotors. These “eVSP” propellers are driven by a “Hydrogen-Ready” diesel-electric system, supported by two battery banks, aiming for zero carbon emissions in the future.

Using Cadmatic’s comprehensive 3D modeling and data management tools, GONDAN successfully tackled the project’s demanding technical requirements and ensured seamless design collaboration.

Limited space for vast systems and services

One of the primary challenges in detailed-engineering for the Sudri Enabler was integrating the extensive array of services and systems within the vessel’s limited space.

According to Javier Martín-Arroyo, Technical Office Director at GONDAN, this required precise coordination of components to optimize the limited area effectively. GONDAN also needed to ensure smooth collaboration across multiple design offices, a complex task given the scale and intricacy of the project.

“Cadmatic proved invaluable in managing these complexities effectively. Its shared database allowed our team members and external designers to monitor real-time progress, greatly accelerating the design phase,” says Javier.

Transparency and collaboration in overcoming design challenges

Cadmatic’s software has been a staple in GONDAN’s design toolkit for over a decade, utilized extensively across their design, production, and outfitting processes. For the Sudri Enabler, the 3D model was accessible to all project stakeholders, offering a shared view of real-time progress. This transparency allowed GONDAN to make design adjustments in response to the shipowner’s evolving expectations, reducing the likelihood of costly modifications later.

“The software’s updated 3D model provides a clear, ongoing view of progress. By identifying and addressing any issues that arise during construction, Cadmatic helps us align the model closely with the owner’s vision, creating a more streamlined workflow,” Javier explains.

Javier adds that Cadmatic’s suite of 3D design, data management, and collaboration tools are ideally suited to projects like the Sudri Enabler. He indicates that the software enables efficient coordination across teams, even when design partners operate from different countries. Cadmatic’s shared database feature in particular fosters collaboration and significantly accelerates the design process.

“Cadmatic is very well-suited for vessels of this nature. Its real-time collaboration and data management capabilities allow us to optimize and coordinate every aspect of the design, creating a well-integrated, high-performance vessel.”

Construction and commissioning of wind farms with zero carbon emissions

According to the shipowner Edda Wind, in just a few years, vessels like the Sudri Enabler will enable the construction and commissioning of wind farms without generating any carbon emissions.

“We are proud that our customer GONDAN has used our software to design such an operationally efficient yet green vessel. They successfully optimized the design, balancing environmental goals with operational efficiency and effective space utilization,” says Verónica Alonso de los Ríos, Cadmatic Senior Sales Manager, Marine.
